South Central Mental Health offers an array of evidence-based parenting classes and support groups.
All groups are facilitated by our team of experienced Parent Support Specialists. Our Parent Support team has years of personal and professional experience and are passionate about supporting and coaching you in your parenting journey.

mEET OUR team of PARENT SUPPORT facilitators
Kay Moore Kay is a mother of four who has fostered and adopted children. She is dedicated to sharing her experiences and insights to help other parents reduce stress and access resources to support their families. Kay has 16 years of experience in mental health at SCMHCC and has spent the last eight years as a Parent Support Specialist. She brings humor to her work and believes in the power of laughter to connect with others. She is an Independent Facilitator of Love and Logic, has received training in Trust Based Relational Interventions (TBRI), Conscious Discipline, and training through The Parent’s Place. She was named SCMHCC's Employee of the Year in 2021. |
Donna Reed Donna is a mother of three, two of whom were adopted from an orphanage in Kazakhstan and experienced neglect and abuse in their early childhood. Her son was diagnosed with Reactive Attachment Disorder late in adolescence, which led Donna to return to school and earn degrees in developmental psychology and social work. She is passionate about helping children and families heal from childhood trauma and has been educated in various interventions, including Love and Logic, Conscious Discipline, and Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI). She has used TBRI in her own family to aid in their healing process. |
Amy Lofton Amy has extensive experience working with children and families for over 30 years. She has worked with several organizations and programs, including Help Me Grow, Parents as Teachers, and the Family Information Network. She is certified in Family Teaching through the University of Kansas and trained in multiple parenting curricula. She is an Independent Facilitator of Love and Logic, as well as The Incredible Years. Currently, Amy is using new programs like the STEP UP Program and an anger management program for teens. Amy was named Employee of the Year in 2018. |
Cheryl Elrod Cheryl is a mother of 4 and a grandmother of 5 with over 30 years of experience working with children and families. She holds a degree in Early Childhood and taught at Head Start for 4 years. Additionally, she has worked for 14 years in the Educare Department at Butler Community College. Cheryl is trained in multiple parenting curricula including Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI), Conscious Discipline, and Love and Logic. She enjoys spending time with her grandchildren in her free time. |

Parenting the Love and Logic Way® 2025 Classes: January 14-February 11 June 10-July 8 September 16-October 21 Tuesdays via Zoom 6-8pm via Zoom What is it about? Love and Logic® curriculums are dedicated to making parenting and teaching fun and rewarding, instead of stressful and chaotic. The courses provides practical tools and techniques that help adults achieve respectful, healthy relationships with their children. Love and Logic Insitute has been a leading parenting curriculum for 45 years. Who is it for? Parenting the Love and Logic Way® is the foundational course in the curriculum series. Love and Logic®: Adults Supporting Youth with Challenging Pasts 2025 Classes: March 4-April 8 (skipping 3/18) July 29-August 26 Tuesdays 6-8pm via Zoom What is it about? Love and Logic: Adults Supporting Youth with Challenging Pasts is designed to provide trauma-informed education and strategies in parenting youth who have experienced trauma or significant challenges. Who is it for? This course is great for parents and caregivers of children of all ages who want to learn more about how to parent and support youth who may be affected by past trauma or challenges. Love and Logic Supporting Youth with Special Needs™ 2025 Classes: April 29-May 20 November 4-18 Tuesday Nights 6-8pm via Zoom What is it about? Learn how to use Love and Logic principles with children with special needs. This program assists parents with understanding the unique needs and competencies of each child, how to avoid becoming overwhelmed by a child’s multiple, severe disabilities, how to maintain healthy “can-do” expectations, tips for teaching life skills, skills for developing and maintaining a cooperative parent-school team, and strategies for reaching discouraged and resistant learners. The 123 Magic for Teens/Surviving Your Adolescents 2025 Classes: January 16-Feb 6 August 7-28th Thursdays 6:30-7:30pm via Zoom What is it about? 1-2-3 Magic Teen will help you establish a calmer, more respectful home and family life and show you how to guide your teenager into healthy, functional young adulthood. 2025 Classes: February 13-March 6 August October 2-23 Thursdays 6:30-7:30pm via Zoom What is it about? In this class, we will follow the book Boundaries with Teens, by Dr. John Townsend. Deal with disrespectful attitudes and impossible behavior in your teen. Set healthy limits and realistic consequences. Be loving and caring while establishing rules. Determine specific strategies to deal with problems both big and small Who is it for? This program is geared towards caregivers of preteen/teen children. Where can I learn more? Trust Based Relational Intervention® 2025 Classes: Starts January 11th-February 22nd Saturay Mornings 10am-12pm via Zoom What is it about? Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI) is an attachment-based, trauma-informed, whole-child approach to meeting the needs of children and youth who have experienced early adversity, toxic stress, and/or relational trauma. The TBRI® model was developed by Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross to address the effects of early adversity and relational trauma through three sets of practice principles: Connecting, Empowering, and Correcting. Who is it for? TBRI® is designed to meet the complex needs of children who have experienced adversity, early harm, toxic stress, and/or trauma. Where can I learn more? 8 Keys to Parenting Your Child with ADHD 2025 Classes: February 13-March 16 What is it about? Facilitator will lead discussion and reflection of weekly readings from the 8 Keys to Parenting Children with ADHD, by Cindy Goldrich. Combining expert information with practical, sensitive advice, the eight "key" concepts here will help parents reduce chaos, improve cooperation, and nurture the advantages―like creativity and drive―that often accompany all of that energy. The Explosive Child A New Approach for Understanding and Parenting Easily Frustrated, Chronically Inflexible Children 2025 Classes: January 9-23 What is it about? Facilitator will lead caregivers in a weekly discussion of The Explosive Child. The book offers a compassionate and collaborative approach to identify the underlying causes of explosive behavior and create practical solutions that promote positive long-term outcomes. Trust Based Relational Intervention® 2025 Classes: March 27-May 22 What is it about? Facilitator will lead caregivers in a weekly discussion of Raising Kids with Big Baffling Behaviors, by Robyn Gobbel. The class will discuss ways to help you regulate and connect with your child, with brain-, body- and sensory-based strategies to overcome day-to-day challenges. She also provides you with the knowledge to understand and regulate your own brain so that you don't flip your lid when your child flips theirs. Who is it for? 2025 Foster Parent Support Group Every Monday via Zoom 11am-12pm This is a support group for foster parents. The group will build community with one another by sharing struggles, successes, and things learned in their parenting journey. |
Raising Resilience Every Thursday via Zoom 6:00-7:30pm This is a support group for all parents. The group will offer a safe space for caregivers to share successes, struggles, and build community with others. The group will read and discuss various books on the subject each week. |
