South Central Mental Health offers an array of evidence-based parenting classes and support groups.
All groups are facilitated by our team of experienced Parent Support Specialists. Our Parent Support team has years of personal and professional experience and are passionate about supporting and coaching you in your parenting journey.

Kay Moore Kay is a mother of four who has fostered and adopted children. She is dedicated to sharing her experiences and insights to help other parents reduce stress and access resources to support their families. Kay has 16 years of experience in mental health at SCMHCC and has spent the last eight years as a Parent Support Specialist. She brings humor to her work and believes in the power of laughter to connect with others. She is an Independent Facilitator of Love and Logic, has received caregiver training in Trust Based Relational Interventions (TBRI), Conscious Discipline, and training through The Parent’s Place. She was named SCMHCC's Employee of the Year in 2021. |

Donna Reed, MSW Donna is a mother of three, two of whom were adopted from an orphanage in Kazakhstan and experienced neglect and abuse in their early childhood. Her son was diagnosed with Reactive Attachment Disorder late in adolescence, which led Donna to return to school and earn degrees in developmental psychology and social work. She is passionate about helping children and families heal from childhood trauma and has been educated in various intervention approaches, including Love and Logic, Conscious Discipline, and Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI). She has used TBRI techniques in her own family to aid in their healing process. Donna received the Ulysess Norman Award of Excellence for her dedication to client and families in CBS in 2024. |

Amy Lofton Amy has extensive experience working with children and families for over 30 years. She has worked with several organizations and programs, including Help Me Grow, Parents as Teachers, and the Family Information Network. She is certified in Family Teaching through the University of Kansas and trained in multiple parenting curricula. She is an Independent Facilitator of Love and Logic, as well as The Incredible Years. Currently, Amy is using new programs like the STEP UP Program and an anger management program for teens. Amy was named Employee of the Year in 2018. |

Cheryl Elrod Cheryl is a mother of 4 and a grandmother of 5 with over 30 years of experience working with children and families. She holds a degree in Early Childhood and taught at Head Start for 4 years. Additionally, she has worked for 14 years in the Educare Department at Butler Community College. Cheryl is experienced in multiple parenting curricula including caregiver training in Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI), Conscious Discipline, and Love and Logic programs. She enjoys spending time with her grandchildren in her free time. |

Mica Runnels
Mica is a mother of four adult children and a grandmother. She has over 15 years of experience working with children and their families to create a brighter future. She received her Associates from Cowley College and her Bachelors in Leadership from Friends University. Mica has completed the Peer Parent Support Service Training. Additionally, Mica is the newest support staff to our CLIP and TIP Programs, as a Community Liaison. Mica is excited to be a part of the individual success of the families we serve. |

Parenting the Love and Logic Way® 2026 Classes: January 6-February 10 May 26-June 30 October 13-November 17 Tuesdays via Zoom 6-8pm via Zoom What is it about? Love and Logic® curriculums are dedicated to making parenting and teaching fun and rewarding, instead of stressful and chaotic. The courses provides practical tools and techniques that help adults achieve respectful, healthy relationships with their children. Love and Logic Insitute has been a leading parenting curriculum for 45 years. Who is it for? Parenting the Love and Logic Way® is the foundational course in the curriculum series. Love and Logic®: Adults Supporting Youth with Challenging Pasts 2026 Classes: February 24-March 31 (no class Spring Break) July 21-August 25 Tuesdays via Zoom 6-8pm via Zoom What is it about? Love and Logic: Adults Supporting Youth with Challenging Pasts is designed to provide trauma-informed education and strategies in parenting youth who have experienced trauma or significant challenges. Who is it for? This course is great for parents and caregivers of children of all ages who want to learn more about how to parent and support youth who may be affected by past trauma or challenges. Love and Logic Supporting Youth with Special Needs™ 2026 Classes: April 14-May 5 September 8-September 29 Tuesday Nights 6-8pm via Zoom What is it about? Learn how to use Love and Logic principles with children with special needs. This program assists parents with understanding the unique needs and competencies of each child, how to avoid becoming overwhelmed by a child’s multiple, severe disabilities, how to maintain healthy “can-do” expectations, tips for teaching life skills, skills for developing and maintaining a cooperative parent-school team, and strategies for reaching discouraged and resistant learners. STEP UP: Building Respectful Family Relationsihps 2026 Classes: Thursdays: May 14-July 9 6pm-7:30pm The Hangar - 510 N. Augusta Ave., Augusta *Parent and Child attend together* What is it about? This parenting class helps families break cycles of disrespect and abuse by focusing on mutual respect, safety, and responsibility. While youth work on safe, non-violent behaviors and taking accountability for their actions, parents learn strategies to respond to abuse, set healthy boundaries, and restore leadership in the home. Boundaries with Teens 2026 Classes: March 26-April 16 October 29-November 19 Thursdays 6:15-7:45pm via Zoom What is it about? In this class, we will follow the book Boundaries with Teens, by Dr. John Townsend. Deal with disrespectful attitudes and impossible behavior in your teen. Set healthy limits and realistic consequences. Be loving and caring while establishing rules. Determine specific strategies to deal with problems both big and small Who is it for? Trust Based Relational Intervention® DVD Series Exploration 2026 Classes: January 13-February 25 (Tuesdays) 6:30pm-8:30pm via Zoom OR January 17-February 28 (Saturdays) 10am-12pm via Zoom $25 per person/series *Course is DVD Based and facilitated by an experienced Parent Support Specialist and is not a TBRI trained practitioner. What is it about? Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI) is an attachment-based, trauma-informed, whole-child approach to meeting the needs of children and youth who have experienced early adversity, toxic stress, and/or relational trauma. The TBRI® model was developed by Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross to address the effects of early adversity and relational trauma through three sets of practice principles: Connecting, Empowering, and Correcting. Who is it for? TBRI® is designed to meet the complex needs of children who have experienced adversity, early harm, toxic stress, and/or trauma. Where can I learn more? 123 Magic For Teens / Surviving Your Adolescents 2026 Classes: February 12-26 August 6-20 Thursdays 6:15-7:45pm via Zoom What is it about? Surviving Your Adolescents: How to Manage and Let Go of Your 13-18-Year-Old) is a parenting resource by Dr. Thomas W. Phelan designed to help parents navigate the challenges of raising teenagers. For teens, the focus shifts from controlling behavior to communicating, understanding developmental changes, and letting go appropriately while still maintaining structure and safety. Love and Logic®: Early Childhood Parenting Made Fun 2026 Classes: June 29 - July 27 Mondays via Zoom 6-8pm What is it about? Love and Logic®: Early Childhood Parenting Made Fun is designed to offer simple solutions to reduce stress and build a strong, positive foundation for your child’s future success. Who is it for? Foster Parent Support Group Contact [email protected] for more information or to register. This is a support group for foster parents. The group will build community with one another by sharing struggles, successes, and things learned in their parenting journey. |
Raising Resilience Every Wednesday via Zoom 6:00-7:30pm This is a support group for all parents. The group will offer a safe space for caregivers to share successes, struggles, and build community with others. The group will read and discuss various parenting books and explore various parenting curriculum (including SELF and TBRI) each week. *Support Group is closed to SCMH Caregivers only* |
Parenting Difficult Teens Every Thursday viz Zoom 6:15pm-7:15pm (join when able) This group offers a safe space for parents navigating the challenges of raising teenagers with social, emotional, and conduct challenges. Here, parents who have felt overwhelmed and exhausted find connection, share what’s worked for them, and discover new resources to support their families. |
