Young children are not able to talk or express themselves in the way adults do about what may be troubling them.  However, they are able to express their experiences and emotions through play.  The trained play therapist provides a safe therapeutic environment for the child to utilize play to express their emotional concerns.  A play therapist may use a variety of techniques and mediums in therapy such as; child-centered play, direct techniques, art, music, and sand.  Parent involvement in the play therapy process is important.  Sometimes a parent may be involved in the sessions and a parent will be given recommendations to help the child at home and in other settings.
