South Central Mental Health offers an array of evidence-based parenting classes and support groups.
All groups are facilitated by our team of experienced Parent Support Specialists. Our Parent Support team has years of personal and professional experience and are passionate about supporting and coaching you in your parenting journey.

mEET OUR team of PARENT SUPPORT facilitators
Kay Moore Kay is a mother of four who has fostered and adopted children. She is dedicated to sharing her experiences and insights to help other parents reduce stress and access resources to support their families. Kay has 16 years of experience in mental health at SCMHCC and has spent the last eight years as a Parent Support Specialist. She brings humor to her work and believes in the power of laughter to connect with others. She is an Independent Facilitator of Love and Logic, has received training in Trust Based Relational Interventions (TBRI), Conscious Discipline, and training through The Parent’s Place. She was named SCMHCC's Employee of the Year in 2021. |
Donna Reed Donna is a mother of three, two of whom were adopted from an orphanage in Kazakhstan and experienced neglect and abuse in their early childhood. Her son was diagnosed with Reactive Attachment Disorder late in adolescence, which led Donna to return to school and earn degrees in developmental psychology and social work. She is passionate about helping children and families heal from childhood trauma and has been educated in various interventions, including Love and Logic, Conscious Discipline, and Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI). She has used TBRI in her own family to aid in their healing process. |
Amy Lofton Amy has extensive experience working with children and families for over 30 years. She has worked with several organizations and programs, including Help Me Grow, Parents as Teachers, and the Family Information Network. She is certified in Family Teaching through the University of Kansas and trained in multiple parenting curricula. She is an Independent Facilitator of Love and Logic, as well as The Incredible Years. Currently, Amy is using new programs like the STEP UP Program and an anger management program for teens. Amy was named Employee of the Year in 2018. |
Cheryl Elrod Cheryl is a mother of 4 and a grandmother of 5 with over 30 years of experience working with children and families. She holds a degree in Early Childhood and taught at Head Start for 4 years. Additionally, she has worked for 14 years in the Educare Department at Butler Community College. Cheryl is trained in multiple parenting curricula including Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI), Conscious Discipline, and Love and Logic. She enjoys spending time with her grandchildren in her free time. |

Parenting the Love and Logic Way® 2024 Classes: January 16-February 13 April 23-May 21 September 10-October 8 What is it about? Love and Logic® curriculums are dedicated to making parenting and teaching fun and rewarding, instead of stressful and chaotic. The courses provides practical tools and techniques that help adults achieve respectful, healthy relationships with their children. Love and Logic Insitute has been a leading parenting curriculum for 45 years. Who is it for? Parenting the Love and Logic Way® is the foundational course in the curriculum series. Love and Logic®: Adults Supporting Youth with Challenging Pasts 2024 Classes: February 27-April 2 July 16-August 13 What is it about? Love and Logic: Adults Supporting Youth with Challenging Pasts is designed to provide trauma-informed education and strategies in parenting youth who have experienced trauma or significant challenges. Who is it for? This course is great for parents and caregivers of children of all ages who want to learn more about how to parent and support youth who may be affected by past trauma or challenges. Love and Logic Early Childhood Parenting Made Fun!™ 2024 Classes: February 1st-22 July 11-August 1 What is it about? Love and Logic Early Childhood Parenting Made Fun! provides a head start for parents of small children. Learn strategies for making parenting fun and learn new ways to address common challenges including how to respond to arguing and whining, misbehavior in public, sibling conflicts, routine challenges, and much more! Who is it for? Parents of children ages birth through six, as well as mental health professionals and educators working with families. Where can I learn more? Love and Logic Supporting Youth with Special Needs™ 2024 Classes: June 11-25 What is it about? Learn how to use Love and Logic principles with children with special needs. This program assists parents with understanding the unique needs and competencies of each child, how to avoid becoming overwhelmed by a child’s multiple, severe disabilities, how to maintain healthy “can-do” expectations, tips for teaching life skills, skills for developing and maintaining a cooperative parent-school team, and strategies for reaching discouraged and resistant learners. The Incredible Years: School Age Basic Parenting Program 2024 Classes: May 2-30 What is it about? Incredible Years is a parent training program that focuses on strengthen parent-child connection through teaching child-based play techniques. The program provides parents foundation and tools for navigating challenging behaviors through such as establishing consistent routines, communication, effective praise and incentives. Who is it for? The Whole-Brain Child Discussion Group 2024 Classes: April 5-May 3 What is it about? Facilitator will lead discussion and reflection of weekly readings from The Whole Brain Child. The Whole-Brain Child is a neuroscience-based approach at understanding a child's brain development and discusses twelve key strategies that foster healthy brain development, leading to calmer, happier children. The Out-of-Sync Child Discussion Group Recognizing and Coping with Sensory Processing Differences 2024 Classes: February 2-March 29 What is it about? Facilitator will lead caregivers in a weekly discussion of The Out-of-Sync Child. The book explores and defines sensory processing disorder (SPD) and includes useful suggestions and practical help to parents who have never heard of sensory processing difficulties and who are aware that their children don’t quite fit in but are not sure how to help them. Who is it for? Relevant for caregivers of children of all ages caring for children with sensory processing difficulties. Where can I learn more? The Explosive Child A New Approach for Understanding and Parenting Easily Frustrated, Chronically Inflexible Children 2024 Classes: April 5-19 What is it about? Facilitator will lead caregivers in a weekly discussion of The Explosive Child. The book offers a compassionate and collaborative approach to identify the underlying causes of explosive behavior and create practical solutions that promote positive long-term outcomes. Who is it for? Caregivers of children of all ages seeking to gain insight and support in caring for children with anger outbursts. Where can I learn more? Trust Based Relational Intervention® 2024 Classes: February 2-March 29 What is it about? Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI) is an attachment-based, trauma-informed, whole-child approach to meeting the needs of children and youth who have experienced early adversity, toxic stress, and/or relational trauma. The TBRI® model was developed by Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross to address the effects of early adversity and relational trauma through three sets of practice principles: Connecting, Empowering, and Correcting. Who is it for? TBRI® is designed to meet the complex needs of children who have experienced adversity, early harm, toxic stress, and/or trauma. Where can I learn more? Support groups - EXCLUSIVE FOR SCMHCC CLIENT FAMILIES ONLY
Support and Self Care for Foster/Kinship/Adoptive Parents Every Wednesday via Zoom 10:00-11:30am This is a support group for non-biological parents. The group will build community with one another by sharing struggles, successes, and things learned in their parenting journey. The group will focus on the importance of self-care while using the book The Brain Warrior's Way by Daniel and Tana Amen to facilitate discussion. |
Book Discussion Group for Caregivers of Foster/Kinship/Adoption Every Wednesday via Zoom 6:00-7:30pm This is a support group for non-biological parents. The group will offer a safe space for caretivers to share successes, struggles, and build community with others. The group will read and discuss various books on the subject each week. |
